Utilities, Trash & Recycling

ELECTRICITY

The majority of Hamilton County is served by the Electric Power Board or EPB. Why do I always want to yell “HEY YOU GUYS!” whenever I talk about the electric company? Weird.

WATER/SEWER

Chattanooga gets its water from the Tennessee American Water Company. If you are in Hixson or other more northern spots in Hamilton County, you’re going to be calling Hixson Utility District for service. Parts of Ooltewah and surrounding areas use Eastside Utility District instead. Believe it or not, I don’t think they have their own website. Apparently, moving on up to the Eastside means moving back to 1994. If none of these work out for you, you might need to look at Soddy Daisy/Falling Water Utilities, ph. 423.332.2427. Believe it or not this is their website.

If sewer service is available it will be provided by the same company that you get your water from. If it isn’t, you’ll have a septic tank instead.

NATURAL GAS

Chattanooga Gas, a division of Atlanta Gas, is the one most people in Hamilton County are going to be using. Outlying areas may not have gas service. If that’s the case, select whichever LP provider strikes your fancy.

CABLE/INTERNET

Comcast is available most everywhere but EPB is rolling out a competing program called My-Fi which uses fiber optic lines (supposedly lightening fast) to deliver not only cable, but also internet and phone service. Not yet available everywhere, last time I checked.

PHONE

You have your choice really. BellSouth/AT&T, Comcast & the aforementioned EPB are all local providers.

RECYCLING

The city of Chattanooga has curbside recycling for many items (Plastic 1′s & 2′s only, steel cans, aluminum, & any kind of paper or cardboard except the shredded variety. No glass!).  There’s no need to sort, just throw it all in clear plastic bags or any kind of container that is clearly marked as recyclables.

In order to participate in curbside recycling, you must call (423) 643-JOIN or click here to sign up. All of the above plus shredded paper, glass, batteries & motor oil can be recycled at any of the local drop off centers.

TRASH PICKUP

Regular garbage service is available throughout the city, in the county you may need to hire your own service. More information is available by clicking the links for Chattanooga, Red Bank, Lakesite, & Collegedale.
